IT Systems Administrator

SpaceX is looking for an experienced IT Systems Administrator to create and manage a robust server, network systems, and datacenter environment. Candidates should have experience working in diverse server environments, complex application hosting and creating reliable networks. Expertise administering complex infrastructure with tools and applications is necessary for providing resilient enterprise services. The ideal candidate will also be flexible and will flourish in a fast-paced and challenging environment. He or she should be a self-starter and have excellent motivation, leadership, and ingenuity to excel at this position.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and maintain our diverse server environments providing simple but effective scalability, performance, and reliability
  • Deploy, upgrade and maintain servers across the entire site
  • Install new/rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements
  • Implement and maintain enterprise-wide network infrastructure for high performance applications and content streaming
  • Apply operating system (OS) patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities
  • Develop and operate enterprise storage systems on high performance and scalable mediums such as network attached storage (NAS), storage area network (SAN), optical, and tape
  • Install and configure servers, network equipment, telephone devices, and other IT datacenter systems
  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups
  • Support SpaceX with the regular maintenance of monitoring, backup, and infrastructure power and cooling systems
  • Research and recommend innovative automated approaches for system administration tasks
  • Identify approaches that leverage resources and provide economies of scale
  • Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required.  Configure central processing unit (CPU), memory, and disk partitions as required
  • Perform regular file archival and purge as necessary
  • Repair and recover from hardware or software failures
  • Create, change, and delete user accounts per request
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience working in an IT systems administrator
  • Experience with automation scripting with languages such as Powershell, Bash, Python, or Perl

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering or technical field
  • Experience in server hardware, management software, storage technologies, and networking
  • Systems administration/system engineer certification
  • Linux experience and certifications (ex: Red Hat, Ubuntu)
  • Experience working with Cisco and Arista networking devices
  • Experience working with VMware products (ex: vSphere, vRealize, ESXi)
  • Experience managing 100+ servers at one time
  • Experience with storage technologies, including RAID, iSCSI, CIFS, NFS, SATA, SAS, and fiber channel
  • Active Directory troubleshooting, GPO (Group Policy Object) creation and deployment experience
  • Experience with WAN/LAN dynamic routing, VPNs, switching, multicast, network security, enterprise monitoring, high performance design, and quality of service for telephony and video applications
  • Must be able to troubleshoot computer hardware, software, operating systems and IP networks
  • Ability to plan, implement, test, and troubleshoot system software
  • Ability to troubleshoot computer hardware, printers, and software
  • Working knowledge of audio visual equipment
  • Must be comfortable working with mission critical and sensitive systems, with a sense of urgency appropriate to the responsibilities
  • Ability to address and resolve information technology issues promptly, effectively and independently
  • Ability to take a highly technical idea and communicate it to others through alternative descriptions
  • Preference will be given to qualified local candidates

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be physically fit enough to regularly lift up to 30 lbs. for duties such as UPS battery replacement, unpacking and rack-mounting equipment, or moving large equipment racks
  • Typically a minimum of 50 hours per week, schedule varies depending on site operational needs, extended hours are common, flexibility required
  • Provide after-hours or weekend support when necessary to perform high-risk or planned downtime of SpaceX datacenter systems for upgrades and maintenance
