Mechanical Engineer - Payload Pointing

Satellite Development

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

  • Work with payload team to develop pointing requirements, error budgets, and verification plans
  • Perform analyses to verify pointing performance of payload, e.g. thermal distortion, control-structure interaction, and jitter analysis
  • Develop test program and execute tests to verify that pointing requirements are met

  • Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering, optics, or physics
  • 1 year work experience with pointing-critical hardware
  • 2 years' experience with finite element analysis
  • 2 years' experience in structural dynamics analysis and testing

  • Advanced Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optics, Physics or other technical areas of study
  • Experience with optics, antennas, actuators and mechanisms in vibration and vacuum environments
  • Experience with structural-thermal-optical-performance (STOP) analysis
  • Experience with modal survey and finite element model correlation
  • Experience with FEMAP and NASTRAN
  • Proficiency in mathematical computing tools such as Python or MATLAB
  • Experience with structural analysis and test, including a working understanding of strength, stability and fatigue
  • Ability to thrive in a unique, fast-paced environment with flight hardware or equivalent
