Lead Buyer – Special Processes

The SpaceX Supply Chain Department is a critical player in our operations. To capitalize on our technical and market success, our team will execute large-scale projects that will define the bottom-line for the company. The functions within the department include procurement, planning and fulfillment, supplier development and quality, logistics and inventory. As SpaceX becomes the overall market leader, they will position us to maximize valuation, fuel growth and ensure achievement.


  • Manage global supply base for special processes, including coatings, non-destructive testing, joining processes, and heat treatments of all types
  • Provide guidance to internal customers on special process technology, specifications, cost, cycle times, and markets
  • Collaborate with engineering on design reviews, suppliers on roadmaps, project technical leads on schedule, and supplier engineering on quality requirements
  • Conduct comprehensive supplier analysis to formulate a sourcing plan that includes strategic direction, technology roadmaps, price trends, market and industry position, and risk assessment
  • Visit supplier facilities and accurately assess technical capability, equipment, and capacity for rapid deployment in support of new product development and long term production
  • Monitor and manage costs to ensure adherence to project-specific budgets and forecasts. Ability to develop Should-Cost models for competitive cost analysis. Deliver best in class TCO (Total Cost Ownership). Hands on experience with special processing in a manufacturing environment is a plus
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team to achieve technology, cost, quality, and delivery targets on SpaceX products
  • Drive internal and external continuous process improvements to enhance efficiency and implement cost-saving and quality improvement programs with suppliers
  • Administer moderate to large contracts and independently negotiate contract terminology, pricing, technical requirements, scope and terms, including responsibility, liability, indemnification, intellectual property and export compliance
  • Prepare, issue, and analyze RFx packages for one-time and ongoing project requirements
  • Train and mentor the special process team on specifications, processing technology, internal workflows, and supplier management
  • Design efficient and effective supply chain solutions including stocking agreements and inventory pull systems
  • Ensure compliance with all company policies, procedures and government regulations 
  • Ensure the SpaceX special process team is continually improving. Measure and provide updates on team and supplier performance trends


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, supply chain, or similar technical discipline
  • 3+ years of technical procurement, engineering, or supplier management experience 


  • Knowledge of the special processes market, manufacturing, and suppliers
  • Experience in sourcing from a global supply base
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams and develop process improvements
  • Exceptional understanding of work order and supply chain management principles
  • Ability to read and absorb technical documents
  • Experience in identifying and executing an optimized supply chain
  • Effective written, verbal and presentation communication skills
  • Ability to learn quickly and prioritize appropriately to meet customer and company needs
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated and able to respond quickly to a fast-moving and ever-changing environment
  • Conducts all activities with the highest of integrity
