FALCON VEHICLE DESIGN ENGINEER

The Falcon team tackles space exploration’s toughest problems through the development of our reusable launch vehicles: Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and the BFR (Big Falcon Rocket). Currently responsible for delivering satellites into orbit and cargo to the ISS, these vehicles will be instrumental in extending humanity’s reach to the moon, Mars, and beyond. As a Falcon Vehicle Engineer, you will spearhead new product introduction and will be entrusted with full ownership of your project from concept development to final integration and testing. You are especially strong in structural design and analysis and employ a ground up fundamental physics approach to problem solving. You thrive in a creative, scrappy, and collaborative environment in which the best ideas change company level direction on a regular basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Full ownership of primary and secondary hardware for our current and next generation launch vehicles
  • Proficient and frequent use of hand calculations, finite element analyses (FEA), and computer-aided designs (CAD)
  • Lead design reviews internally and participate in reviews with suppliers and customers
  • Own the hardware delivery timeline and success through inception, design, assembly and launch
  • Lead acceptance and qualification testing of hardware to meet NASA human rated flight requirements

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline
  • Experience with CAD and FEA software packages
  • Hands on hardware experience performing fabrication, assembly and/or testing - can be in a professional, academic or recreational setting

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Hands-on project leadership experience
  • Experience with NX or other major CAD packages
  • Solid understanding of technical projects from the detailed level to how it fits into the big picture
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Travel to vendors and SpaceX launch/test sites as needed
  • Intermittently able to work longer hours and weekends to support critical needs

  • To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
